COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Kings Way Supportive Living

The Kings Way LifeCare Alliance hosts a number of programs/and initiatives meant to include the greater community. One of the goals of our outreach programs is to make our homes destinations within the community that people want to visit.

Backpack program: Our residents pack backpacks full of nutritious food for children struggling with food security at home. Since 2015 the Kings Way LifeCare Alliance has partnered with a Saint John school to provide nutritious food to families that struggle with food security on weekends. A second Quispamsis school was added so children in two communities receive these bags filled with love. Residents look through flyers, purchase the food, pack the bags and then deliver them to the schools once a month throughout the school year. During the first year of the program the residents packed over 200 bags and helped 50 families. This program has been funded through grants from the Greater Saint John Community Foundation, The New Horizons for Seniors and the Town of Quispamsis along with personal donations and initially through a partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 502 who donated their 50/50 money!

Classroom Visits: Each year Kennebec Manor and Kings Way Care Centre partner with local schools in the area. This partnership involves visits to a classroom, usually elementary school. The residents take part in the regular classroom curriculum and form special bonds with their school ‘buddies’. The children see the various challenges our Elders are living with, which in turn fosters a sense of compassion and empathy amongst the students. Elders delight in being involved in the lives of the children while getting to witness the fun and chaos that surrounds the kids.
